Getting Started

How do I add my first holding?

  1. Open Darkfolio
  2. Tap the folder icon (top left) to create a portfolio
  3. Name your portfolio and tap Create
  4. Tap "Add Holding" or the + button
  5. Search for an asset (e.g., "BTC" or "AAPL")
  6. Enter your quantity and tap Save

How do I import from a screenshot?

  1. Take a screenshot of any app showing your holdings
  2. In Darkfolio, tap the camera icon in a portfolio
  3. Select the screenshot from your photo library
  4. Review the detected holdings and tap Import

Screenshot import uses on-device Vision OCR. Your screenshots are never uploaded anywhere.

Privacy Features

What is Quiet Mode?

Tap your total value to instantly hide all dollar amounts. Values display as masked dots to prevent shoulder surfing. Tap again to reveal.

Perfect for checking your portfolio on the train, in public, or when someone glances at your screen.

What is Ghost Mode?

Ghost Mode creates two separate portfolios with two different PINs:

  • Your real PIN unlocks your real portfolio
  • Your decoy PIN unlocks a separate (empty or fake) portfolio

Use cases:

  • Shared devices — Keep your investments separate from family finances
  • Privacy — Show a decoy if someone asks to see your phone
  • Peace of mind — Your real holdings stay private

How do I enable Tor?

Settings → Privacy → Enable Tor

Tor routes your price requests through the Tor network, hiding your IP address. First connection takes 30-60 seconds.

How do I manage my subscription?

Settings → Subscription → Manage Subscription

This opens Apple's subscription management where you can upgrade, downgrade, or cancel.

What happens if I cancel Pro?

Your data is never deleted. If you exceed free tier limits, extra portfolios and holdings become "inactive" but remain on your device. Resubscribe anytime to restore access.

Troubleshooting

Prices not updating?

  1. Pull down to refresh
  2. Check your internet connection
  3. If using Tor, ensure it's connected (look for the shield icon)
  4. Wait 60 seconds between refreshes (rate limiting protects privacy)

App Lock not working?

  1. Go to Settings → App Lock
  2. Ensure a PIN is set
  3. Try disabling and re-enabling App Lock

Widget not appearing?

The Darkfolio widget is a quick-launch widget that opens the app — it doesn't display prices (this is a privacy feature). To add it:

  1. Long-press your Home Screen
  2. Tap the + button in the top corner
  3. Search for "Darkfolio"
  4. Choose your preferred widget size

Lost my PIN?

For security, we cannot recover PINs. If you've forgotten your PIN:

  1. Delete and reinstall Darkfolio
  2. Your portfolio data will be lost (this is by design — we cannot access it)

Tip: Store your PIN in a password manager.

Data & Backup

Can I export my data?

Currently, Darkfolio doesn't support data export. Your holdings are stored encrypted on your device.

Does Darkfolio sync between devices?

No. We intentionally don't offer cloud sync because it would require storing your data on servers. Your portfolio exists only on your phone.

What happens if I delete the app?

All data is deleted. We have no backup. This is by design — we never have access to your data.

Technical

Why does Darkfolio require iOS 17?

We use SwiftData for encrypted storage, which requires iOS 17. This also ensures modern security features.

What devices are supported?

  • iPhone 13 and newer (recommended)
  • iPhone SE (3rd generation)
  • Older iPhones running iOS 17

Does Darkfolio work on iPad?

The app is designed for iPhone but runs on iPad. Full iPad optimization is planned for a future release.
